puzzle canons & other counterpoint

Compositions by Timothy Dwight Edwards, scores available for purchase

While these canons comprise a small part of my works, recent recording has prompted requests for some of my contrapuntal scores and puzzle canons, many from Ænigmata Harmonia. This small catalog is featured here to help address that recent surge of interest.

Puzzle Canon no.15 at the fourth a6 from Ænigmata Harmonia

(Puzzle Canon XV in diatessara supra a6)

2006 / Arranged for two oboes, two English horns, and two Bassoons, 2013

I have collected fifteen favorites among my interval canons and called the collection Ænigmata Harmonia, meaning harmonious enigmas. Each canon uses a different interval. I plan to have the score to the full set of fifteen typset and available early in 2017, but for now, this arrangement of just one of those canons is available on its own. This arrangement was made for Double Entendre Music Ensemble who performed it several times in the New York area and recorded it on their 2014 CD "Double Take".

Puzzle Canon Receipts of the Forme of Cury

2007 for chorus SATB / (2 of 3 canons are from Ænigmata Harmonia*)

Another puzzling title? Hint: 'Receipts' is an archaic word for 'recipes' which is what this piece is all about. The three recipes which comprise the texts of these canons are taken from The Forme of Cury, A Roll of Ancient English Cookery, compiled by the Master-Cooks of King Richard II in the fourteenth century.

Full score for chorus includes program note, performance indications, and the enigmatic forms of the canons. Minimum duration: 4' 30"; maximum duration: forever. These are perpetual canons.

1. Funges (Mushrooms), canon in hypodiatessera a4 (from Ænigmata Harmonia*)
2. Grewel of Almaundes (Almond gruel), canon in diapason a4
3. Peeres in Confyt (Pears in comfit), canon in epidiapente a4 (from Ænigmata Harmonia*)
